Senior Backend Engineer - Search

Permanent employee, Full-time · Berlin

About us
“This startup is set to revolutionize classical music” - Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

Our vision is to enrich people’s lives through classical music. Classical music connects people all over the world, transcending culture, race and generations. It inspires and evokes emotions and thoughts in a way no other art form can.

We are a classical music tech company on a mission to build the best streaming service for classical music. A service that really caters to the unique depth and complexity of the genre, with a sophisticated user experience that makes accessing classical music easier than ever before.

We work with all the major and independent record labels and rights holders around the globe and maintain close personal contact with the world’s leading musicians and institutions, from iconic artists to future stars and from great orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic to institutions such as the Lucerne and Verbier Festivals.

IDAGIO is available to music lovers across the globe. Physically we are rooted in Berlin and we consider the German-speaking countries, perceived by many as the cradle of classical music, to be our home base.

Where you'll contribute

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer with a strong background in Search to join our marvelous Product-Backend team: a group of people with a shared interest in scalability, modern workflows, sharp tools, and clear communication. At IDAGIO we’re all about drive, open-mindedness and trust - we take initiative, leave our comfort zone and show care, interest, and respect towards each other.

Come build the best classical music search experience in the world with us.

  • Set the direction of our search feature, a critical part of the product. Does it need more precision? Should you add machine learning on top? Should you look into new data structures or extract logic into an open source library? You decide.

  • You will collaborate with passionate technologists to reach your goals. Need to spin up four 32GB instances of ElasticSearch to run a load test? Need someone to reduce the memory footprint of your ingestion script from by 90% so it still fits on one machine? Need a CSV export of search queries from our 10k most active users? The team has got you covered.

  • You will learn and grow: if you want to organize a search conference and need some budget for the speakers, if you want to research a new approach for significantly improving search quality, or if you simply want to write a blog post about how search works - initiative is prized and cherished. Make a strong case for your idea and you will get the time, the support and the resources you need.

Experience and personality traits we find relevant for this position
  • You are a well-rounded engineer. You know how to write an integration test which populates an index with documents and checks for matching queries; it doesn’t sound intimidating to SSH into remote machines; and, as much as you hate it, you’ve gotten used to the quirks of network requests and can slalom your way through HTTP status codes.

  • You value other people, enjoy teamwork and know how to listen - an important and necessary skill if you want to translate the feedback of our users and classical repertoire experts into analyzers and character filters.

  • You’ll need to have mastered the basic building blocks of ElasticSearch, Apache Solr or similar: pick that phonetic algorithm which matches Russian surnames, choose that token filter for German compound words, add that aggregation to build an advanced search filter. For fun and profit.

What we have to offer
  • Join an exceptional multinational team of 75 and shape the future of classical music - read about the team here.

  • Enjoy a positive and purpose-driven working atmosphere in our office in Berlin Kreuzberg.

  • Contribute directly to the success of our beautiful product.

  • Enjoy flexible working hours, occasional remote work and using the tools and hardware of your choice.

  • IDAGIO is well funded by renowned investors such as Tengelmann Ventures, Macquarie Capital and b-to-v.

  • Receive a competitive salary and a yearly education budget.

  • Sharpen your piano skills on our Steinway Model D, and yes, there is good coffee too.

  • We can support you with your visa process and answer questions you might have. Berlin is a beautiful city with lots to do.
